In response to Toronto’s 2014 mayoral election, CUE took a surreal approach to a surreal campaign trail. In launching our own mayoral “campaign”, we aimed to highlight the futility of politics to affect real change for the communities and individuals we support.

Through photo-bombing media scrums, impersonating the press, distributing parody campaign literature and videos and putting up lawn signs, we created our own kind of campaign to illustrate the circus of the elections, and to represent the margins through a creative critique of the system.

Toronto’s municipal elections have been dominated by hot-button topics—taxes, economy, transit. But what is the difference between LRTs and subways when you can’t afford to take public transportation in the first place?

While new approaches in leadership can be helpful, we wonder what a shift in political power can really do for those of us who are systemically oppressed and marginalized as we rocket into trends of centralized power, economic disparity, and systems that only push us further to the margins, and further away from the core of our own selves.
