"...but there are new suns" — a solo show by amber williams-king, opening September 21st

This solo exhibition of new works by amber williams-king explores themes of intimacy, spirituality, liberation and emergence through the use of  textiles, film and sculpture. “… but there are new suns” investigates and reconfigures mass media portrayals of Blackness to illuminate alternative geographies, impressions and perhaps possibilities.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

amber williams-king is a conceptual Antiguan artist, living and practicing in Tkaronto. Working in a variety of mediums, she sees mixed media as a way of acknowledging the multiplicity and fluidity of being and uses materials that speak best to the narrative at hand. This self-taught practice seeks to challenge notions of a monolithic Black experience; exploring sexuality, gender, race, representation and the intersections of identity. She investigates personal and public photographic archives to explore history, memory and myth in an effort to excavate new possibilities. amber has exhibited in spaces across the city, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, and collaborated on a number of community art projects with a focus on challenging anti-Blackness and state-sanctioned violence against marginalized bodies. Most recently, she was a finalist for the 2017 Toronto Art Foundation’s Emerging Artist Award.
